Can you change a tyre without a locking wheel nut?

A locking wheel nut is a must if you want to get your tyres replaced. This is because each wheel has a unique locking wheel nut installed. This basically functions as an anti-theft system, preventing a thief from taking off your wheels whenever they like and indeed, since locking wheel nuts were introduced, wheel theft has substantially reduced which is great on the one hand, but not if you’ve lost your wheel nut and need to have a tyre changed. Where can I find my locking wheel nut key?

Depending on the model of your vehicle, your locking wheel nut key will either be:

in the glove compartment
in a separate compartment under the spare tyre
in the boot – check in all the nooks and crannies

What happens if I lose my locking wheel nut key?

You can buy a new key from the manufacturer or from a dealership, but this can be an expensive option and you’ll need the key’s unique code so that they can replace it with the exact one that fits your vehicle.
